Hilltop Arboretum Invites You

To Its 26th Annual PlantFest!

By Sean Griffin

It’s time to make some space in the back of your pick-up trucks and SUVs for Hilltop Arboretum’s 26th annual PlantFest!. The plant sale, which will include plenty of gardening equipment and unique plants for your yard and garden, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 4 between noon and 4 p.m. The sale will take place at the Hilltop Arboretum, located at 11855 Highland Rd.

“Not only do you get to see and buy some great plants, but you also get to hear expert knowledge about the plants as well as important gardening tips,” Peggy Davis, executive director of Hilltop Arboretum said.

Plant Selection

A list of the plants available at the sale will be posted online and interested buyers can actually preorder their plants by visiting Hilltop Arboretum’s Web site. Deadline to pre-order is Sept. 12, 2009.

Davis said the plant selection is unique because of the quality of plants that will be available. “We have the opportunity to learn about connoisseur plants that you’re not going to find in many other nurseries. We pick our plants from nurseries throughout the South,” she said.

Teaser Sale

A teaser sale will be held as a special preview for the plant sale. The PlantFest! teaser will be held Saturday Aug. 29, 2009, at Hilltop’s Margaret Holmes Brown Pavilion. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. the day of the event and admission is $10 for Friends of Hilltop members and $15 for nonmembers.

Marion Drummond and Wayne Womack will show and tell about all the new plants that will be available at Hilltop's 2009 PlantFest!. Drummond is the former site director for Hilltop Arboretum and is an authority on native plants and new cultivars. Womack has been Professor Emeritus in Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University for more than 30 years.
